Rocky Mountain High

One of our adventures this summer was a weekend trip to Durango, Colorado.  Grandpa B and Miles have had this train on their list of trains they want to ride, so we decided it was time to check it off their list this summer.  We headed up to Colorado for the July 4th weekend.  On the way there, we stopped at Four Corners National Monument and the kids got to stand in 4 states at once!  So did Grandma and Grandpa B.

You know your dad loves you when he voluntarily sits on the very last seat of the bus, right next to the bathroom because that's where you want to sit.
We rode a bus up to Silverton and got to hang out there in town for a couple hours before our train ride.  While we were there we decided to take a ride on this old stagecoach.

After lunch and a stagecoach ride, it was time to board the train for the ride down the mountain.

We were glad we had seats on the enclosed car.  It was a rainy day.  That didn't stop anyone from hanging out the windows during the ride though.

The scenery for the ride was very pretty.
Towards the end of the ride, the train climbed way up the side of a gorge.
There isn't much room beside the tracks before the rock drops away to the gorge.
That's a narrow space between those rocks!

I think it's a good thing we didn't do the 7 hour ride, this one was tuckered out before her 3 1/2 hour ride was over.
The next day we decided to go for a little hike.  When you start your hike at 10,000 feet, it doesn't take long before you run into snow!  We stopped for a little snowball fight.
My beautiful kids compliment the scenery so well in this picture.
 Snack break!
We decided to stop here.  That is Engineer Peak in the background.  It is just shy of 13,000 feet.  We hiked to about 11,500 feet.  That is officially the highest the kids have been so far.
We almost got rained on, but made it down the mountain just in time.
We ended the day with a yummy dinner and a game of miniature golf.  The kids had been asking to go miniature golfing all summer, so they were really excited to finally find a course!
Our trip to Durango was way too short.  We have already decided that we might just have to go back again next summer!
